BEIJING: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) shook Tajikistan at 8:37 a.m. (0037 GMT) on Thursday, JEE News reported, citing the China Earthquake Networks Center.
JEE News reported that the epicenter was about 82 kilometers from the nearest border with China and was felt in parts of western Xinjiang, including Kashgar and Artaks.
State media Xinhua reported that power supply and communications remained normal in Kashgar.
Xinjiang’s railway department has suspended passenger trains on the Aksu to Kashgar section of the Southern Xinjiang Railway, state media said.
Local authorities were inspecting bridges, tunnels and signal equipment, said.
