Emergency services in Spain have confirmed a seventh death after a bus plunged from a bridge into a river on Christmas Eve (Saturday).

Rescue workers pulled the body of a woman from the Lerez river in the northwestern Galicia region on Monday.

Two people, including the driver, were injured when a bus from Lugo to Vigo plunged 30 meters (98 feet) into a fast-flowing river.

Officials say bad weather may have been the cause of the accident.

They say that the bus driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Rescue teams initially ended their search near the village of Padre, not far from Santiago de Compostela, Galicia’s regional capital, after six bodies were found on Christmas Day (Sunday).

But they resumed operations after a surviving passenger said a friend she was traveling with was not on the official list of victims.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil police told JEE News that the woman was not reported missing because no one was waiting for her.

His body was found in the river by helicopter on Monday morning.

Emergency services were first alerted to the incident by a passing driver who told them a section of the bridge’s safety barrier was missing.

A few minutes later, one of the survivors called to them from inside the bus as it was rapidly filling with water.

This helped the rescue teams to locate the accident site quickly.

JEE News quoted local media as adding that those on board included people who had visited loved ones in a prison in central Galicia.
