CENTCOM chief, COAS Munir discussed US-Pakistan security cooperation.

WASHINGTON: US General Michael “Eric” Corrella has congratulated Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir on assuming charge of his new post in a video teleconference.

General Karila spoke to COAS General Munir and discussed US-Pakistan security cooperation efforts and strengthening bilateral ties.

JEE News reported that a statement from US CENTCOM spokesman Col. Joe Buckino said that General Asim Munir and General Kerela had a relationship dating back to Gen Kerela’s time as CENTCOM chief of staff.

General Asim Munir took over as Army Chief.
General Munir took over as the Army Chief on November 29, while former Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa handed over the baton of command of the Pakistan Army in a ceremony held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

With the change of command, General Munir became the 17th Army Chief of Pakistan Army.

General Munir was commissioned in the 23rd Frontier Force Regiment in 1986. He passed out from the 17th Officers Training Course Mangala and was awarded the sword of honour.

Before assuming charge, he was posted as Quartermaster General at General Headquarters.

Before assuming charge as COAS, General Munir was posted as Director Staff at Command and Staff College Quetta, Brigade Major of Infantry Brigade stationed at Kiel, General Staff Officer, Grade 2, CGS Secretariat and Chief of Mangala Corps. Also posted as Staff. .

The incoming Army Chief has also served as the Director General of Military Intelligence (MI).

In 2018, General Munir was appointed Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and was later transferred as Corps Commander Gujranwala.

After commanding Gujranwala Corps, he was posted as Quartermaster General which was his last assignment before becoming COAS.

General Munir graduated from Military School Japan, Command and Staff College Quetta, Malaysian Armed Forces College Kuala Lumpur and National Defense University Islamabad.

The General also holds an MPhil in Public Policy and Strategic Security Management from the National Defense University.

General Munir has become the first army chief to head both MI and ISI. He is also the first Army Chief to be awarded the Sword of Honour.

General Munir is an avid sportsman, reader and traveller.
