A 14-year-old girl died and a 13-year-old girl was seriously injured in a knife attack on her way to school in southern Germany.
Police say the suspect came out of a refugee shelter in the village of Ilerkirchberg on Monday morning and attacked the pupils.
The older girl later died in hospital.
German police have arrested a 27-year-old man, who they say is an Eritrean asylum seeker.
Officers searched a nearby building and found him with a knife they suspect was used in the attack. Two other persons were also detained.
The suspect is under police guard at the hospital where he is being treated for an unspecified injury.
In a statement, police urged the public not to use the incident to raise suspicions about foreigners or asylum seekers.
“Everything related to this is still completely unclear,” police spokesman Wolfgang Jürgens told reporters.
According to local media, the 13-year-old girl is recovering from her injuries, which are not life-threatening.
Illerkirchberg is a small town with less than 5,000 inhabitants according to the 2015 census.
Mayor Marcus Heusler said everyone in the town is in shock.
German Interior Minister Nancy Fesser said the “terrible news” had left her shaken.
“I mourn the loss of the girl and sincerely hope that the injured girl recovers… The police are diligently investigating all the background,” he said.
