Qamber local court on Sunday granted three-day physical remand against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Senator Azam Khan Swati in a controversial case registered in the district.
The PTI leader is facing defamation charges for using abusive language against senior army officers in his tweets. After taking him into custody from Balochistan Police on Friday, Sindh Police transferred him to District Qamber.
Today, Swati was produced in the court of the Judicial Magistrate and Civil Judge in Kambar.
On the request of the police, the court sent Swati to police custody on three days’ physical remand.
Controversial tweets cases
Swati is facing multiple cases across the country – as her lawyer told a hearing in an Islamabad court – for her controversial tweets.
Initially, the senator was arrested by the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) on October 14 after posting highly hateful and threatening messages against the army chief, judiciary and other state institutions on his official Twitter account.
The senator got bail in this case. But on November 27, the FIA once again arrested Swati for using abusive language against former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa.
On December 2, Balochistan Police arrested Swati in Quetta in connection with a similar case.
At the time of his arrest, he was already on judicial remand in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, after being detained for the second time in the controversial tweets case. He was then transferred to Quetta under transit remand obtained by the Balochistan Police.
However, the Balochistan High Court had issued a directive not to register any further cases against Swati in the province and to quash all existing FIRs against her in the province.
But on December 9, Balochistan Police handed over Swati to Sindh Police. The senator’s lawyer Iqbal Shah confirmed that the Balochistan police handed over the separatist to Sindh, despite the Balochistan High Court ordering his release.
