United Nations Secretary General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres has urged the interim government of Afghanistan not to allow terrorist organizations to use Afghan soil for attacks on Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). ), called for support from the World Bank and the international community. Speaking at a year-end press conference at UN headquarters in New York, Guterres said the UN was in talks with the transitional authorities in Afghanistan.
He said that he believed that the Taliban should act from the perspective of the interests of the international community and the interests of Afghanistan itself.
The UNSG also urged the IMF, the World Bank and the international community to help Pakistan cope with the aftermath of the devastating floods that devastated the country in July-September.
Talking about his expectations for the January 9 Geneva conference aimed at helping the flood-ravaged country in its recovery efforts, the UNSG said Pakistan needs strong support as one of the country’s most vulnerable countries. A third is under water.
The Secretary General will co-host the Geneva Conference with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Guterres said he was in touch with the IMF and the World Bank and hoped that these institutions would make significant efforts to help Pakistan.
The UN chief said the people of Pakistan deserved and needed a strong expression of international solidarity as 33 million people were affected by the floods and more than 1,700 people died.
UNSG visit to Pakistan
In September, the UNSG made a two-day solidarity visit to Pakistan amid devastating floods. He visited the flood-affected areas and emphasized the need for developed countries to help Pakistan, saying that the help of the international organization was a “drop in the ocean” in comparison.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said that during a visit to the flood-affected areas and camps in the scorching heat, the UN Secretary-General expressed surprise at the scale of the devastation engulfing Pakistan.
He said that the voice of the head of the United Nations has become the voice of the flood victims.
Emphasizing the need for international cooperation to deal with natural disasters and control carbon emissions, the Prime Minister said that the world should pay attention to what he said about climate change.
