ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided that its legislators will take their written resignations to National Assembly (NA) Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf in person and get him to confirm them. Say, sources told JEE News.
PTI sources have confirmed that 123 of their MNAs will go to the Speaker of the National Assembly to confirm their resignations on December 22. He added that the legislators will gather at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House in Islamabad before going to the Parliament.
MNAs intend to go to Parliament under the leadership of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
A day earlier, Qureshi replaced PTI chairman Imran Khan as the party’s parliamentary group leader in the House.
However, the Speaker of the National Assembly rejected Senator Shibli Faraz’s request to approve the resignations of PTI MNAs, saying that any decision in this regard would be within constitutional limits.
The Speaker said that many PTI legislators had privately urged him not to accept his resignation. Ashraf added that in such a situation, MNAs should approach the Speaker personally and confirm their handwritten resignations.
Meanwhile, PTI MPAs in Balochistan have split into two factions over the PTI chief’s decision to resign from all assemblies. A group of MPAs led by PTI parliamentary leader Naseebullah Marri supported the resignations, while another MPA Yar Muhammad Rand opposed the idea.
In an interview on Sunday, Punjab Chief Minister Pervez Elahi – a staunch ally of the PTI – also claimed that 99 percent of the country’s people are against the dissolution of the assemblies.
