Attack on Deputy Speaker KP Assembly Mehmood Jan in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Deputy Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly Mehmood Jan was fired upon by unknown persons in Regi area of the provincial capital on Friday, police confirmed.

KP SSP Operations Kashif Aftab Ahmad Abbasi told JEE News, “Unknown persons fired in the air and search is on. The Deputy Speaker has been shifted to his house safely.”

The police officer said that the Deputy Speaker was involved in a property dispute. Abbasi added that he came under attack during the inauguration ceremony of a development project.

In his statement, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader said he was attacked when he was addressing an event related to cattle. He added that the guards fired back at the attackers.

John added that neither he nor anyone else was injured in the attack. However, the attackers escaped.

The incident took place when the militants captured a center of the counter-terrorism department in Bani and took the officials there hostage. The facility was later cleared by the Pakistan Army’s Special Services Group (SSG).

In a press conference on Friday, Additional IGP Police Mohammad Ali Babakhel said that the police has conducted 2,715 operations against terrorists during this year.

“Ransom calls from Afghanistan and suicide bombings in Waziristan are huge challenges. However, we are seeing positive results from our operations in Malakand,” he said.

“Organized criminal organizations are also involved in operations against the police. We have also convicted 15,600 police officers in various cases, while 600 have been fired,” he added.

To ensure that they can defeat the terrorists, the Additional IG said the police have requested the provincial government to provide them with night goggles.
