New biometric system has been launched to verify SIM cards.

ISLAMABAD: An improved version of the Biometric Verification System (BVS) for issuing SIM cards has been launched to control the sale of illegally issued SIMs, JEE News reported on Saturday.

Telecom companies will use the new system called Multi-Finger Biometric Verification System (MFBVS) and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) headquarters. An agreement was signed between

BVS devices available through cell channels have been upgraded by NADRA and CMOs to meet new system requirements. The new system requires multiple fingerprints for verification and previous fingerprints of the applicant while issuing a new or duplicate SIM.

Additionally, control over the selection of fingerprints for authentication purposes has been transferred from the seller’s representative to the system, which randomly asks for two different fingerprints, implementing the new system to prevent the illegal use of fake fingerprints. NADRA Chairman said that MBFVS has immense potential to keep fraudsters and fraudsters at bay.

He said that the new system is an intelligent solution that uses a local smart algorithm where the system suggests finger selection rather than finger position.

The improved system will not only eliminate silicon-based fingerprints used to issue mobile phone SIMs, but also prevent attempts to purchase illegal SIMs.

He added that the new system will combat fake SIM issuance and identity fraud, protect privacy and strengthen Pakistan’s national security.
