Two goals in two minutes saw 10-man Kilmarnock pick up a potentially priceless Scottish Premiership point in a surprise game at Motherwell.
Goals from Kevin van Veen and Callum Slattery looked set to give Motherwell their first home win since August.
It looked even more certain when Kilmarnock’s Alan Power was sent off as the game went into the final quarter for a rash tackle on Paul McGann.
But McGinn’s own goal, then a superb Liam Polworth strike, grabbed a point.
“There was no doubt, we would have long odds to get something after the red card,” admitted Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes.
“We are delighted with the efforts of the players, their fitness, the impact of the subs. The fans were fantastic and I can’t thank them enough. They gave the team oxygen and they got us over the line.
“We all accept that we can be better; we can be naive at times. But I have never doubted our efforts, every player gives us everything they have.
“But, the question was asked at 2-0 and we got the result. We deserved it, there’s no way around it.”
Both sides entered the game in terrible form – at home to Motherwell and away to Kilmarnock. Having previously lost their last five on the spin at Fair Park, the visitors struggled to secure a league victory after nine attempts.
It was Motherwell who made the better start, quickly shaking off any rust after their long break – last weekend’s home game against Livingston was canceled after bad weather damaged the stadium. .
Stuart McKinstry had two chances in the first half, one well saved by Sam Walker and the other going inches over the bar. Blair Spittal also tested the Kilmarnock defence, but two efforts at the back were strongly blocked.
Instead, it was Van Veen who opened the scoring. A quick throw from Slattery allowed Spittal to go back to the Dutchman, who landed a knee in the top corner.
It was a well-deserved lead, with Kilmarnock registering just one shot on target in the first half.
The second half started in similar fashion, and it was no surprise when Motherwell doubled their lead.
Van Veen was given space to gallop into the box and, although his shot was initially saved by Walker, Slattery headed home the rebound.
Soon after came Power’s red card, and the writing was on the wall. It was a daunting challenge that McGinn was lucky to walk away from.
Moments later he wasn’t so lucky, turning Danny Armstrong’s cross into his own net.
Then, bolt from deep blue, as Liam Polworth slotted in 30 yards for Derek McInnes to pull off a Christmas miracle and move them out of the relegation places.
