Pakistan were bowled out for 438 runs in the first innings of the Test against New Zealand in Karachi on Tuesday.

Middle-order batsman Agha Salman scored his maiden century and Pakistan resumed on 317-5 after the last man out on 103.

Captain Babar Azam fell in the first over of the day without adding to the overnight score of 161.

For New Zealand, fast bowler Tim Southee took 3-69 in his 89th Test to complete 350 Test wickets.

The tourists had a chance to finish Pakistan short of 400 runs but Salman and Taillanders put on a 63-run partnership for the last two wickets to frustrate the Kiwis.

Azam scored a brilliant century and Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was called up, scored a half-century to take Pakistan to 317-5 on the first day.

The pair led Pakistan’s recovery from 110-4 with 196 runs for the fifth wicket, as the home team lost only Sarfaraz in the final two sessions.

The New Zealand spinners had to wait till the end to get Sarfraz caught at slip for 86 after taking the opening three wickets on a spinner-friendly track at the National Stadium.

As the game ended, Azam remained unbeaten on 161 as Pakistan looked to bounce back from a 3-0 drubbing by England last week, their first whitewash at home.

Azam is the highest run-scorer in Tests in 2022 with 1,170 runs in nine matches this year.

He also scored a total of 2,584 runs that year, surpassing Muhammad Yousuf’s total of 2,435 runs across all three forms in 2006.
