At least 14 people were killed and 24 others injured when a vehicle plowed into a crowd of bikers watching a carnival in the southern Nigerian port city of Calabar.

Eyewitnesses say that the speeding driver lost control of the car.

Photos shared online soon after the incident showed bodies scattered in the street.

The month-long annual carnival, which features several events, has become a major draw since its inception in 2004.

Known as Africa’s biggest street party, it attracts local and foreign tourists throughout December.

Tuesday’s incident occurred during a popular bikers’ parade on one of the carnival’s main thoroughfares, which was closed to vehicular traffic.

In the event, riders including celebrities from across the country, some decked out in colorful costumes, perform stunts.

A drunk driver – who has been arrested – lost control of the car and plowed into the crowd, police said.

Cross River State Governor Professor Ben Ayade canceled the parade of the remaining bikers and called for an immediate investigation.

Other events planned for the rest of the carnival – which is set to end with a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve – have not been cancelled.
