KARACHI: Several people, including a child and women, were injured in aerial firing in different areas of Karachi. Despite the ban on the display of firearms, excited citizens protested on the occasion of the arrival of the New Year.
As the clock struck 12 o’clock on Saturday night to herald the arrival of the year 2023, the port city echoed with the sounds of heavy gunfire. At least 22 people were hit by stray bullets.
The injured were taken to Sadar, Garden, Osmanabad Panjwani Plaza, Light House, Raja Mansion, Hussainabad, Board Office at Nazimabad (where a minor child was injured), Nazimabad Bridge, Liaquatabad No. 4, Five Star Chowrangi, Kharadar. was taken to the hospital. Kashmir Colony, Dhuraji Chowrangi, Expo Center (where one woman was injured), Al Asif Square, ICI Bridge Soomro Street, Landhi Future Colony (where one woman was seriously injured), Nagan Chowrangi (where one woman was injured), Kasbah Colony Katti. The youth who was injured in the firing at DA Chowrangi in North Nazimabad has been identified as 20-year-old Shahmeer son of Khurshid Alam. A 22-year-old youth identified as Naveed son of Sher Hussain in Hussainabad. 36-year-old Baidal son of Shah was injured in Naya Golimar area of Nazimabad, while 35-year-old Adeel son of Nisar was injured in Liaquatabad No. 4.
According to hospital sources, eight injured were brought to Civil Hospital, four injured were brought to Jinnah Hospital, ten injured civilians including women and children were admitted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. According to rescue sources, 22 people have been injured.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested three persons on charges of aerial firing in Korangi and registered a case of attempted murder against them. Law enforcement agencies arrested more than 10 miscreants in the city.
The people of Karachi took to the streets and roads to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. Five Star Chowrangi was crowded with people. Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Kamran Tesori reached Nizam Chowrangi where a large number of citizens gathered to watch the fireworks.
People also gathered at Clifton Seaview and Two Rivers to watch massive fireworks to celebrate the New Year. Separately, various clubs, hotels and organizations organized massive fireworks displays to welcome the New Year. Fireworks were also set off in other areas of the city including Bahria Town and Bagh Ibn Qasim.
