The MQMP leadership said that they would take a decision on the matter only after consulting their party workers. The MQMP leaders demanded that both the Muslim League-N and the PPP should implement the agreements made with the party.
He said that he has serious reservations about the current demarcation of constituencies in Karachi, which should be resolved. He clarified that MQMP is ready for local elections but its demands regarding constituencies are in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government’s legal team reportedly briefed the meeting that no change in constituencies could be made immediately. He explained that the process could take up to four months as it involves a lengthy exercise to realign constituencies.
The legal team said that it is the responsibility of the Sindh government to conduct local body elections in Karachi and Hyderabad as per the directions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The Election Commission can initiate punitive action against the officials of the provincial government for violating the orders of conducting the elections. Officials of the Sindh government said that the final decision to hold or postpone the elections is the ECP’s because the provincial government itself cannot take any decision in this regard. The ECP officials themselves are monitoring the arrangements for the timely conduct of elections in Karachi and Hyderabad on the scheduled date of January 15.
