ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday rejected the request of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and declared that local body elections in Karachi and Hyderabad will be held on January 15 as per schedule.

The MQMP had challenged the ECP’s decision on the possible use of two separate electoral rolls simultaneously in local government elections.

A three-member bench of the election body headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja reserved the verdict on Friday.

Jamaat-e-Islami also approached the Election Commission demanding that the elections be held as per the schedule, which have been postponed several times due to one reason or another.

Announcing the decision, the ECP directed the authorities to ensure timely conduct of elections.
