LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering a detailed review of the team management after a disappointing Test home season that could limit Babar Azam’s role in the team across all formats.
According to JEE News sources, the PCB management committee headed by Najam Sethi is reportedly not happy with the current set-up and is considering a wholesale review after the conclusion of the eighth season of the Pakistan Super League in March.
Pakistan have lost three out of five Tests and won none, raising questions over Babar Azam’s leadership in the red ball format.
PCB sources aware of the development told the channel that changes in team management and leadership are expected due to the disappointing performance of the team recently.
The PCB is considering removing Babar Azam from the all-format captaincy and appointing separate captains for the three formats.
The inclusion of Shaan Masood as vice-captain for the ODI series against New Zealand in place of Shadab Khan was part of the same long-term strategy, sources said, adding different captains for the red and white ball formats are also possible.
He said that the names of Sarfraz Ahmed and Shan Masood are being considered for the Test captaincy.
The current PCB management is thinking of retaining the captain of one of the formats and a decision in this regard will be taken after the PSL.
Head coach Saqlain Mushtaq and bowling coach Shaun Tait may also not be retained after their contracts expire in February as the board is considering hiring a foreign coach for the Green Shirts.
Attempts to bring in Mickey Arthur failed due to the former head coach’s prior commitments with Derbyshire County.
