PCB considering appointing Shoaib Akhtar as bowling consultant

Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering appointing former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar as the bowling consultant of the national team.

Following Shahid Afridi’s appointment to the PCB’s management committee, the cricket board is considering approaching the right-arm pacer for expertise in the game.

According to reports, Akhtar may be given an important role in the national team in the coming days.

Sources say that the former fast bowler has already been approached and has also shown interest in working to improve the performance of the players.

Akhtar will soon meet PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi in Lahore. During the meeting, the former fast bowler is likely to be offered a role in the PCB.

According to sources, Akhtar had also shown interest in playing an important role in the board’s policy making.

After his retirement from cricket, the bowler – also known as the Rawalpindi Express – has repeatedly called for improvements in the Pakistan team.

The 47-year-old former right-arm fast bowler holds the record for the fastest bowler in cricket history — 161.3 kmph —

PCB’s management committee also appointed former Pakistan captain Afridi as the interim head of the selection committee for the home series against New Zealand.

The decision was taken under Sethi’s leadership after the government approved his appointment as PCB chairman.

Other members of the panel include Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum while Haroon Rasheed (Member Management Committee) will be the convener.
