LAHORE: Punjab Assembly Speaker Sabtain Khan on Thursday informed the bi-partisan parliamentary committee to consider the names for the Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab.

The move came after Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi and Leader of Opposition Hamza Shehbaz failed to agree on a name for the top post.

According to the notification, the parliamentary committee includes Mian Aslam Iqbal, Raja Basharat and Hashim Jawan Bakht from the government side, while Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, Hasan Murtaza and Nadeem Kamran from the opposition side.

The names for the parliamentary committee were proposed by Chief Minister Elahi and Hamza Shahbaz, the notification was read.

As per law, the committee has three days to reach an agreement on a name for the top post in Punjab. In case of dispute, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will decide the matter.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) had proposed the names of Prime Minister’s Advisor on Establishment Ahad Cheema and senior journalist Mohsin Naqvi for the top post.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) nominated Ahmad Nawaz Sukhira, Naseer Ahmed Khan and Nasir Mehmood Khosa as caretaker chief ministers.

Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman on Tuesday directed the PA Speaker to form a parliamentary committee to elect a caretaker chief minister after failing to reach an agreement between the chief minister and the opposition leader.

“The result of this fact is that the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Provincial Assembly of Punjab did not agree to appoint any person as Caretaker Chief Minister within the stipulated period as per Article 224(1A). According to the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, you are required to fulfill your obligation by informing the undersigned in the manner described in Article 224A(2) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
