Accrington Stanley 1-0 Boreham Wood AET: Tommy Leigh penalty earns hosts Leeds United tie

Tommy Lee’s extra-time penalty booked Accrington Stanley an FA Cup fourth-round tie with Premier League Leeds United as they beat Boreham Wood.

Lee scored with his right foot after fouling Shaun Whaley in the area to decide a delayed third-round replay.

A win for League One side Accrington took them into the fourth round for just the fourth time in their history.

National League club Boreham Wood’s best effort came with a late acrobatic effort from Lee Ndlovu.

They pressed in the second half of extra time but could not breach Accrington’s defence.

Leeds manager Jesse Marsh was among the crowd, checking out his side’s opponents on Saturday, but can feel confident after watching the game with few shots on target.

Borehamwood, looking to become the first non-league side to make the fourth round in consecutive seasons for 37 years, produced little in the way of chances in normal time.

They only made it to extra time thanks to a dramatic save from Nathan Ashmore, who cleared Sean McConnell’s free-kick off the line four minutes from time.

Chances were high that the game was delayed by a week due to freezing conditions in mid-January. There was only one effort on target in the first half, Tyrone Marsh firing on target for the visitors.

It means Wrexham will be the only team outside the top four divisions in the fourth round, with the Welsh side hosting Sheffield United on Sunday.
