ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday declared Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).
The ECP delivered its decision on a petition filed by the former prime minister amid an ongoing tussle over party leadership with his cousin Pervez Elahi.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Elahi had planned to remove Shujaat from the post of party president.
In July last year, the PML-Q’s Central Working Committee (CWC) decided to relieve Shujaat from the party president’s duties citing health concerns.
The decision to remove Shujaat from the party command was taken in the CWC meeting chaired by Senator Kamil Ali Agha.
Speaking to the media after the CWC meeting, Kamil Ali Agha said that it has become necessary to isolate Chaudhry Shujaat to save the party from destruction.
According to The News, it was also decided to expel Federal Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema from the party in the meeting.
At that time, the CWC also constituted an electoral body to conduct intra-party elections.
However, Shujaat approached the ECP over the matter and it retained the former prime minister as party president till the petition was processed.
After hearing the petition, the election body had reserved its decision on the case on August 18, 2022.
Muslim League-Q divided into two camps on the issue of joining hands with PTI and Muslim League-N.
Pervaiz Elahi, his son Monis and most of the party leaders supported the PTI while Chaudhry Shujaat, Salik Hussain and Tariq Bashir Cheema supported the PML-N.
