Blackburn Rovers booked a trip to Leicester City in their FA Cup fifth round replay after an extra-time win at fellow Championship side Birmingham.
It needed a goal from City defender Austin Trusty in the first half of extra time to settle the contest at St Andrew’s.
Bradley Dyke made the woodwork for the visitors during normal time while former Rovers man Reda Khadra was one of several Birmingham players thwarted by Rovers keeper Ainsley Pearce.
It is the first time in six years that Jon Dahl-Thomassen’s side have reached the last 16.
Both teams made five changes to the sides that played out a 2-2 draw at Ewood Park on Saturday.
The in-form deck – which put Rovers ahead in the opening tie – saw an early free-kick saved by Neil Etheridge, who also kept out a deflected Harry Pickering drive with his legs.
At the other end recalled keeper Pearce produced a natural stop to prevent Daniel Ayala from turning Manny Longello’s low cross into his own net.
Khadra tried to break through after half an hour but had no further chances in a low-key opening 45 minutes.
The second half improved considerably and Jake Well curled wide from 20 yards while Dyck met Joe Rankin Costello’s near post cross but he fired his effort into the roof of the net.
Pearce produced a fine save to keep out Scott Hogan’s close-range effort after Khadra played Longueulo down the left and he also blocked on-loan Wolves man Dion Sanderson’s far-post header on the hour. .
Deck came even closer when he hit the outside of the post with a first-time shot after Ben Breton-Diaz’s neat let-off and Kevin Long’s spirited effort end-to-end after Trusty was knocked out. And the pattern continued. Stopped by the pear.
Tyrhys Dolan parried a shot off target in the closing stages while Pears needed to be alert to deny substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz to send it into extra time.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 100th minute when Dolan and Sammy Smodeux combined down the left and trustee Sam Gallagher could only turn a low cross into his own net under pressure.
The Blues pushed for an equalizer but could not repeat their late heroics from Saturday.
