Former dictator General (retd) Pervez Musharraf passed away at age of 79.

Former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf died at the age of 79 in a Dubai hospital after a long illness, his family confirmed on Sunday.

The former military ruler was being treated for amyloidosis at the American Hospital in Dubai.

Last year, reports of Pervez Musharraf’s death were circulating but were dismissed by the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), the political party founded by the former president.

The party denied reports of his critical condition or being on ventilator. It added that Pervez Musharraf is undergoing treatment for amyloidosis at his home and his condition is stable.

Amyloidosis is a condition caused by the buildup of abnormal proteins in organs and tissues that prevent them from working properly.

Musharraf was born on 11 August 1943 in Delhi, British India. He received his commission from Pakistan Military Academy Kakul on 19 April 1961.

After receiving the commission, the former dictator joined the Special Services Group.

The military ruler also participated in the wars of 1965 and 1971.

He was promoted to the rank of General in 1998 and assumed the post of Chief of Army Staff (COAS), a post he held till 2007. A year later on October 12, 1999, General (retd) Musharraf seized power through a coup. etat

Musharraf became Pakistan’s longest-serving president when he assumed the reins of the country. He was elected president in a referendum in 2002 and held the position until 2008.

During his tenure, the military leader accepted the US proposal to become a frontline ally for Pakistan after the 9/11 incident.

Later in 2004, he was elected president in uniform for five years through the 17th amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan.

Pervez Musharraf is also known for his unconstitutional moves to oust Supreme Court judges in November 2007, sparking the Lawyers’ Movement – also known as the Judiciary Restoration Movement.

After a movement led by political parties, Pervez Musharraf resigned from the post of President on 18 August 2008.

The former military ruler was sentenced to death by a special court on December 17, 2019 under Article 6 of the Constitution. A case of high treason was registered against him during the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) era.

Pervez Musharraf was present in court on March 31, 2016 when he was indicted.

Later, due to illness, he went out of the country. He did not return to Pakistan after leaving the country.

Condolences are pouring in.
Reacting to this news, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad and the heads of the three armed forces expressed their heartfelt condolences on the demise of the former Army Chief. expressed.

The Army’s media wing said, “CJCSC and Services Chiefs express their heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of General Pervez Musharraf, former President, CJCSC and Chief of Army Staff. May God rest his soul in Jowar Rahmat and the bereaved family.” Give strength.”

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior vice-president Fawad Chaudhry offered his condolences, saying: “Musharraf was a great man […], ‘Pakistan first’ was his ideology and vision.”

Former Punjab chief minister Parvez Elahi, while pouring in condolences, said that Musharraf’s services to the Pakistan Army and the country cannot be forgotten.

Expressing deep sorrow over the former president’s death, Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani said that he shares his grief with the bereaved family.
