Australian T20 captain Finch retired from international cricket

Melbourne: Australia T20 captain Aaron Finch on Tuesday announced his retirement from international cricket, drawing a line under a career that saw him score more than 8,000 runs across all formats.

A hard-hitting opening batsman and limited-overs specialist, the 36-year-old retired from the ODI team in September to decide on his T20 future after Australia’s World Cup title defense ended before the semi-finals. Took time home summer for.

He had an excellent tournament in the domestic Big Bash League, scoring 428 runs at an average of 38.9 to help guide the Melbourne Renegades to their first finals series in three years.

However, this was not enough to convince Finch to play for Australia.

“It’s been an incredible honor to be able to represent Australia for 12 years and play alongside and against some of the greatest players of all time,” Finch said in a statement.

“Team success is what you play for and winning the first T20 World Cup in 2021 and winning the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be two of my fondest memories.”

He finished with 5,406 ODI runs at an average of 38.89 and 3,120 runs in T20s at an average of 34.28, and led Australia to the first T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021.

He also won the World Cup on home soil in 2015 as a member of the team captained by Michael Clarke.
