The Syrian army says five people have been killed after Israeli missiles hit the capital Damascus and surrounding areas on Sunday.

A building in the central Kafr Susa neighborhood was hit, killing four civilians and a soldier, officials said.

Gunjanabad is home to a large, heavily guarded district.

The Israeli military declined to comment on the attack when contacted by JEE News.

Israel frequently strikes targets linked to Iran and Hezbollah militants in Syria but rarely acknowledges its actions.

Sunday’s attack was the first since a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit parts of the country’s northwest as well as neighboring Turkey 12 days ago.

Apart from high officials and security agencies in Kafr Susa area, ordinary citizens also live in residential buildings.

Syrian officials said the attack – which took place at 00:22 local time (21:22 GMT) – damaged several houses in Damascus neighborhoods and other nearby areas.

The country’s defense ministry said the rockets were fired from the Golan Heights, a rocky plateau southwest of Damascus that Israel annexed in 1981.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at 15, including civilians.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory, said Sunday’s attack in the Syrian capital was Israel’s deadliest attack.

The attack comes a month after an Israeli attack on Damascus’ international airport killed four people, including two soldiers, according to the Syrian army.

Israel has previously acknowledged that it targets the bases of militant groups loyal to Iran.

The two countries are bitter enemies and have engaged in what has been described as a “shadow war” of unprovoked attacks on each other’s assets, infrastructure and civilians in recent years.
