A religious group is staging a nationwide shutter-down strike on Monday against skyrocketing inflation and the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products.
Hotels and shops are closed in different areas of Karachi, Kharadar, Burns Road, Old City, Etihad Town, Baldia Town and surrounding areas. However, the traffic is moving normally.
Meanwhile, several schools remained closed due to the uncertainty in the port city.
Apart from this, a protest is being held on the road from Qaim Khani Colony of the municipality to Orangi Town. Protesters burnt tires and erected barricades and blocked the roads.
A day ago, the local businessmen of Haripur had announced to keep their business centers open on February 27 (today).
In a statement, Young Traders Group leader Malik Wajahat Mehboob Awan said local traders have unanimously decided to stay away from the religious group’s strike call and will keep their shops open on Monday.
He said that the traders have decided to boycott the shutter down protest call and will not be part of any such activity as local traders are already badly affected by the economic crisis the country is going through for the past several months. .
He added that joining such protests would increase the difficulties of traders.
He advised the religious party to show political power by using some other method instead of forcing the traders to bear more losses. Asking fellow traders not to respond to any such calls and keep their shops open without any fear, Wajahat urged the traders against any kind of misadventure in cooperation with the local administration to ensure the safety of the trading community.
