More than half of Argentina’s national electricity grid has been affected by the fire.
The capital, Buenos Aires, other major cities and large parts of the countryside have been completely or partially affected.
The fire reportedly started in the open fields, affecting main power lines in the coastal region and knocking a nuclear power station offline.
The blackout comes amid a heat wave and drought in Argentina.
During the South American country’s summer months, temperatures are consistently above 35C in some parts of the country.
The dire situation with power outages has brought daily life to a standstill in some areas, with classes suspended and businesses closed. Many people have to go without air conditioning or even refrigeration.
Big cities have been the hardest hit, with an estimated 150,000 people still without electricity in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area.
The Ministry of Energy has said that it is confident of restoring power soon.
Power cuts are not uncommon in the country. A massive power outage in 2019 left millions in the dark in Argentina as well as in neighboring Uruguay.
And in 2020, millions of homes in Buenos Aires were plunged into darkness.
