ECP is likely to propose elections in Punjab after Eid.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will meet for the third consecutive day today (Friday) and it is expected that a proposal will be made to hold general elections in the Punjab Assembly in the last week of April.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja presided over the meeting at the commission’s secretariat here, which was attended by its members as well as the secretary.

After the decision of the Supreme Court in the case related to the delay in the elections of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assemblies, the forum held a full deliberation on the second day as well.

According to sources, the ECP decided to propose the Punjab Assembly elections about a week after Eid-ul-Fitr, which is likely to be held on April 22.

Sources said that the holy month of Ramadan and the religious festival of Eid are being kept in mind.

He pointed out that some tentative decisions had been taken but they would be announced after the consultation was completed.

Accordingly, a letter to President Dr. Arif Alvi, proposing a date for Punjab Assembly elections, is likely to be sent on Friday.

After the approval of the President, the schedule of Punjab Assembly elections will be released soon.

The Punjab and KP Assemblies were dissolved on January 14 and January 18, respectively, and by law elections were to be held within 90 days of their dissolution.
