Matthew Mott says England’s T20 series whitewash by Bangladesh an ‘eye-opener’

England’s 3-0 loss to Bangladesh in the Twenty20 series was an “eye-opener”, according to white-ball coach Matthew Mott.

Bangladesh is ranked ninth in the world rankings while England is the T20 World Champion.

England won the previous one-day international series 2-1, but have struggled to adapt to the conditions in the shorter format.

“It hurts, to lose 3-0,” said Mott, who was named Whiteball coach in May 2022.

“We were really proud of our one-day win because it was a huge effort. But to finish the way we did today will leave a bit of a sour taste in the mouth.”

The hosts successfully defended 159 runs on a slow, worn pitch in Bangladesh’s 16-run win at Mirpur.

England reached 142-6 in reply but left to rue a sloppy fielding performance in which he dropped two catches, while a series of misfields resulted in boundaries.

“Our first 15 overs on the field were nowhere near the level we expected,” said Mott, whose side next play New Zealand at home in late August.

“We’ve been up against a very strong home team, but we were ready for it today – everyone was ready. But for whatever reason we just couldn’t collect the ball in the air or on the ground.”

The England team was particularly depleted in the batting line-up, with key players including Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone and Alex Hales missing for various reasons.

After the defeat in the second T20I, skipper Jos Buttler said it was important for other players to get “exposure” to the white ball ahead of the 50-over World Cup in October, which Mott emphasized.

“There was a realization that we would be better off keeping those batsmen out in pressure situations,” Mott said.

“You just learn from your mistakes and take those opportunities, and I believe we made the right decisions.”
