The Election Commission of Pakistan has postponed the general elections scheduled for April 30 in Punjab.

A notification has been issued in this regard.

According to the notification, the Punjab Assembly elections will now be held on October 8 and a new polling schedule will be issued.

Earlier, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had announced that there would be instability, disorder and chaos if elections were held for the two provincial assemblies as per the order of the Supreme Court.

Addressing the joint session on Wednesday evening, he said that the announced date of April 30 is also beyond the constitutional limit of 90 days.

The minister said that if elections to all assemblies are held simultaneously, it will ensure a level playing field for all.
