ISLAMABAD: After less than two months in office, Barrister Shahzad Ata Elahi has resigned as Attorney General for Pakistan, sources informed JEE News on Friday of the development.
According to sources, Elahi has resigned from the post due to personal reasons.
On 2 February, the Ministry of Law and Justice announced that Barrister Shehzad Atta Elahi had been selected as the AGP.
A statement issued by the ministry and signed by Muhammad Umar Aziz, Joint Secretary to the Government of Pakistan, said at the time: “In exercise of powers under Article 100(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973, the President has expressed pleasure in appointing Barrister Shehzad Ata Elahi as Attorney General for Pakistan and he has been appointed as Federal Minister with immediate effect.
Article 100(1) states that the President shall appoint as AGP any person who is qualified to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Elahi filled the shoes of AGP after Mansoor Usman Awan stepped down from taking charge as the government’s senior counsel.
President Dr. Arif Alvi approved the appointment of Supreme Court lawyer Awan as AGP on December 23 after accepting the resignation of Ishtar Usaf Ali. Ali resigned in October last year due to health reasons.
However, the federal government did not notify the appointment – the reasons for which were not officially disclosed.
