The government has announced that the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will get the same income as a judge of the Supreme Court.

The Ministry of Law issued a notification stating that the Chief Rules and Regulations for employment of the Accountability Watchdog will be the same as that of a Supreme Court judge.

According to the notification, NAB chief Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmed will get a monthly salary of Rs 17 lakh along with an official residence and two vehicles.

Apart from this, the head of NAB will also get free electricity up to 2 thousand units and 600 liters of petrol per month. They will also be authorized to acquire two kanal plots in Islamabad.

Earlier this month, the federal government appointed Lieutenant General (retd) Ahmed as the chairman of NAB for a period of three years.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has said in a notification that the appointment has been made after a consensus between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Raja Riaz on behalf of the federal government.

The notification said that the post of Chairman NAB was vacant on February 15 after the resignation of Aftab Sultan was accepted.

After “detailed deliberations”, both sides agreed on the appointment of Lt Gen (retd) Ahmed.

The NAB chairman, according to the law ministry, will hold office for a “non-extendable term of three years” and will not be eligible for subsequent appointment.

The notification further stated that the removal of the Chairman from office is also not possible except on the grounds and in the manner provided in Article 209 of the Constitution.
