Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina stayed on course for a rare ‘sunshine double’ as they advanced to the Miami Open.

Tenth seed Rybakina defeated world number three Jessica Pegula 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 to reach the women’s final.

World number one Alcaraz beat American ninth seed Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-2 to reach the men’s semi-finals.

She is bidding to become the eighth man and fifth woman to win the Indian Wells title with the Miami title.

Kazakhstan’s Wimbledon champion Rybakina, who beat Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final last week, has now won 13 matches in a row.

She will play either Czech Petra Kvitova or Romania’s Sorana Sarastia in Saturday’s final.

Defending men’s champion Alcaraz, who must win the title to stay top of the rankings, will face Italian Genk Sner in the last four on Friday – the two played out an epic five-hour quarter-final at last year’s US Open.

It will be the sixth meeting between the pair – the Spaniard leads 3-2 – who are seen as one of the best rising rivalries in the men’s game.

“I’m happy to play against him again because I look forward to these types of matches,” said Sner. “I think he makes me a better player.”

Medvedev on course for a fifth straight final

On the other side of the men’s draw is former world number one Daniil Medvedev, who continued his fine form with a straight sets win over American qualifier Christopher Eubanks in the quarter-finals.

The fourth seed produced a commanding performance to win 6-3 7-5 and will play fellow Russian Karen Khachanov.

Khachanov won 6-3 6-2 against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo.

“We grew up together,” Khachanov said.

“Whenever Daniel plays against Andrei [fellow Russian Andrei Rublev], or I play against Andrei or Daniel, it’s never easy because we know each other well and we’re good friends off the court. “

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, has won 22 of his last 23 matches and beat Eubanks to reach the semifinals of his fifth straight ATP event.

After back-to-back titles in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai, Medvedev was defeated by Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final.

In the women’s draw, Kvitova advanced to the semi-finals in Miami for the first time with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in a rain-delayed quarter-final.
