One person has been killed and dozens injured after the roof of a theater collapsed due to a storm in Illinois.
About 260 people were inside the Apollo Theatre, Belvedere, when the roof collapsed at 19:55 local time (01:05 BST), the local fire department said.
Five people are in critical condition, said Fire Chief Sean Schedel.
A series of severe storms hit several US states on Friday, killing at least four people in total.
Widespread damage has been reported in parts of the South and Midwest – the states of Arkansas and Missouri have declared states of emergency. Tens of thousands lost power.
A large tornado hit the Arkansas state capital of Little Rock, flipping cars, tearing off roofs and downing trees. Local officials said one person was killed and the city’s mayor reported at least 24 people injured.
State Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed two deaths in the town of Wayne, about 100 miles (170 km) from Little Rock.
More than 40 tornado reports were received in six states Friday night, according to the U.S. government’s Tornado Prediction Center.
Several flights were delayed or canceled at Chicago O’Hare International Airport as passengers were told to take shelter due to “severe weather.”
In Tennessee, Covington Mayor John Hensley pleaded with people to “don’t drive around” because power lines were downed by the storm.
The Covington Police Department described the city as “impassable,” sharing photos of downed power poles and roads blocked by large trees downed in front of homes.
Mrs. Huckabee Sanders deployed the National Guard after what she called “significant losses” in central Arkansas.
As of 20:30 local time, more than 70,000 were without power in his state, according to the US Power Outages website.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center in Little Rock said it expects at least 15-20 patients.
Baptist Health Medical Center, the state’s largest hospital, said it had five patients in critical condition.
The night of deadly storms comes just over a week after a rare, long-track twister killed 26 people in Mississippi.
President Joe Biden visited the state Friday to offer condolences and pledge federal aid.
In a bulletin, the Storm Prediction Center warned that some expected storms could track long distances over land.
The Mississippi tornado moved 59 miles (94 km) last week and lasted about an hour and 10 minutes — an unusually long time for a tornado to sustain itself. About 2,000 homes were damaged, officials said.
