US Vice President Kamala Harris chose to sidestep the question of impeachment against former President Donald Trump during a joint press conference with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on Friday.
The question was raised in light of news that a Manhattan grand jury had indicted Trump a day earlier following a lengthy investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
“I’m not going to comment on the ongoing criminal case because it involves the former president,” Harris told reporters.
However, Zambia’s President Hachilema gave his reaction to this news during a press conference. The two leaders were holding a joint press conference as part of Harris’ visit to Africa.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden also refused to comment on the indictment against former President Donald Trump.
What did Trump do?
Trump is allegedly involved in hush money paid to adult film star Stormy Daniels, making him the first former president to face criminal charges.
However, the exact charges are yet to be ascertained as the indictment is currently under seal.
According to JEE News, the charges against former President Trump could include more than 30 counts of business fraud.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and insisted he is “completely innocent” of all charges. He also vowed not to drop out of the 2024 presidential race despite facing criminal charges, accusing Manhattan District Attorney Bragg of engaging in “political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history.”
The former president also appealed to his supporters to donate money to his legal defense, a plea that has since raised more than $2 million.
The money in question was paid to Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.
Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal lawyer, has said he coordinated payments to Daniels and another woman, Karen McDougall, who claimed to have had sex with Trump.
The former president initially denied any knowledge of the payment to Daniels but later admitted to paying Cohen.
Daniels’ attorney, Clark Brewster, emphasized that no one is above the law, and Cohen, who pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in 2018, stood by his testimony and evidence provided to prosecutors. stay
