A day ago, Amir Jamaat-e-Islami held separate meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PTI chief and started efforts to bring PTI and the ruling coalition to the negotiation table.
In the meeting with the Prime Minister, the current political situation of the country and the judicial crisis were discussed. Leaders agreed that problems should be solved with collective wisdom.
Sources familiar with the matter said the meetings were highly successful as both sides agreed to sit at the negotiating table to end the months-long standoff that has badly affected the country’s economy and people.
The PTI chief and his party have been protesting since his sacking in April last year and demanding early elections, which the government has consistently denied.
The PTI dissolved the Punjab and KP assemblies to force the government to hold nationwide elections, but the Shehbaz-led administration did not budge.
But the situation changed when the Supreme Court ordered to hold elections in Punjab on May 14. However, Parliament overruled the decision, locking the judiciary and the government by the horns.
He added that “Jamaat-e-Islami had decided to contact the political parties to create a consensus for holding the elections on the same day”. Jamaat-e-Islami Information Secretary Qaiser Sharif, citing Haq, affirmed that the country cannot afford any chaos at this time.
The JI leader added that both sides agreed to continue the meetings and involve other parties in the process.
He said that the Jamaat-e-Islami delegation also met the PTI chairman at his Zaman Park residence, during which PTI appreciated the efforts of the former chairman.
The parties agreed to continue contact even after Eid-ul-Fitr.
