ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has warned the Supreme Court against intrusion into the purview of the Parliament, saying that “others will also try to enter your purview”.
In an interview, Ashraf said that if Parliament’s power to legislate is unacceptable, then they [the Supreme Court] should take over the task of legislating.
Ashraf said that if the parliament is to use its legislative powers as per the wishes of the Supreme Court or the High Court, then the fable of elections should end.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s judgment in which it had stayed the implementation of the bill to abrogate the Chief Justice’s powers before it became law, he said: “How do you enter the purview of the elected representatives of the people?” Now that you’re logged in, other people will try to enter your domain.
He said that the Supreme Court should listen to all the parties, the government should also strictly avoid, political matters should never be taken to the court because it not only damages the politics but also weakens the judiciary. .
“Division is necessary in politics, but division in the Supreme Court is dangerous”, he noted.
The veteran politician said that parliamentarians should resolve all political matters themselves in parliament or any other forum.
Regarding the Army Chief’s address to the in-camera meeting on national security, Ashraf said that General Asim Munir’s words and explanation of his thinking were very satisfactory.
The Speaker said that the manner in which the Army Chief expressed his confidence in the observance of the Constitution and the supremacy of the Parliament strengthens it. He said that the country needs such ideas.
In response to a question about the possibility of any new anti-terror operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Balochistan, the Speaker said that no new operation would be carried out but the law enforcement agencies were already taking action against the miscreants.
