Officials say at least 78 people have been killed when a school was crushed in the Yemeni capital Sanaa during the distribution of charity for Ramadan.
Video footage circulating on social media shows scenes of chaos after the incident in Bab al-Yemen area of the city.
JEE News reported that hundreds of people gathered at the school to receive the donations, which amounted to about $9 (£7) per person.
Houthi rebels have held the city since toppling the government in 2015.
The Interior Ministry said that those responsible for the distribution have been detained and are being investigated.
A health official in Sana’a said that many people have also been injured, 13 of whom are in critical condition.
Houthi fighters fired into the air in an attempt to control the crowd, apparently hitting a power line that caused the explosion, JEE News reported, citing two witnesses. He added that this created panic which led to the crush.
The incident occurred during the last days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which includes the fasting period.
Yemen has been devastated by conflict that escalated in 2015, when the Houthis seized large parts of the country’s west.
President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi fled abroad and a coalition of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia intervened to restore his rule. However, there was a military stalemate for years after that.
More than 150,000 people have reportedly been killed in the fighting and more than 23 million people – three-quarters of the population – are in need of some form of aid.
A major prisoner exchange between Yemen’s warring sides began last week, seen as part of an accelerated effort to end the devastating eight-year conflict.
