President Dr. Arif Alvi on Thursday expressed his serious concerns and asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review the legitimacy of the caretaker governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) after the 90-day period ends.

The President of the State sent a letter to the Prime Minister from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry, in which he has been asked to consider the issues raised by the former federal minister to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and strengthen democracy in the country.

In his letter to the President, Fawad raised issues regarding the legality of the interim setup in the country’s two provinces.

He had said that the interim governments in Punjab and KP have completed their fixed period and the constitution does not make any provision for continuation or extension of the fixed period for the interim setup.

Fawad added that caretaker governments were introduced as per Article 224 of the Constitution to facilitate the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in conducting free, fair, just and fair elections in accordance with the Constitution and the law.

The President also asked the Prime Minister to look into the matter to ensure the supremacy of the Constitution and the strengthening of democracy in Pakistan.
