During the first of the five-match ODI series in Rawalpindi on Thursday, it was Zaman who opened the day for the home side, bringing Pakistan within 34 runs of victory and eventually caught on an errant shot. Done.
Imam-ul-Haq (60 off 65 balls) and Zaman put on 124 for the first wicket by the 22nd over, negating New Zealand’s attack on the flat pitch at Pindi Stadium.
Haq, who hit five fours and a six in his 15th ODI fifty, was removed by spinner Ish Sodhi once before the league, with a 90-run partnership between Zaman and captain Babar Azam taking Pakistan further towards the target.
Azam fell one short of his half-century when he edged fast bowler Adam Milne behind the stumps to Tom Latham. He hit three fours and a six off 46 balls.
Pakistan faltered when Shaun Masood got out for one off 12 balls and Agha Salman for seven runs, but Muhammad Rizwan made sure the opportunity did not go to waste with an unbeaten 42 off 34 balls.
This victory was Pakistan’s 500th victory in 949 ODI matches.
