ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has made it clear that the Punjab Assembly elections cannot be held on May 14 as various activities and demands cannot be scheduled to meet the timeline.

The commission has submitted three reports in the Supreme Court on the matter but it has not been summoned for further hearing. Top Commission sources told JEE News on Monday evening that the postponement/cancellation of elections on the given date will be announced next week.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Atta Bandyal, ordered the holding of Punjab Assembly elections on May 14 last month.

Sources said the commission had not ordered the suppression of ballot papers, photo voter list and other items related to funding. Retention and training of the required staff is yet to be done. Sources said that this entire exercise involves a huge amount of money which is not available with the Election Commission.
