ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Friday met King Charles III and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of a meeting of other Commonwealth leaders in London.
He congratulated the two British dignitaries for their splendid arrangements for the two-day celebrations to mark the coronation of the new monarch. The Prime Minister also appreciated Britain’s generous assistance in the wake of the devastating floods in Pakistan last year. He suggested that the two countries need to enhance bilateral relations in various fields. In this regard, Shahbaz Sharif proposed the establishment of a joint commission, which will be headed by the leaders of both countries.
King Charles III and the British Prime Minister also expressed interest in further strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries and appreciated the role of the Pakistani community living in the UK in the development of the country.
Apart from this, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended and addressed the meeting of Commonwealth leaders in London on Friday. He urged Commonwealth leaders to mark the accession of King Charles III as the beginning of a new era and opening up new opportunities and new avenues for the remarkable family of nations known as the Commonwealth.
The Prime Minister urged the leaders to re-imagine and re-energize the Commonwealth and imbue it with greater cohesion and a stronger sense of purpose. The Prime Minister also mentioned his government’s commitment to equip the Pakistani youth with the right kind of skills and opportunities. He added that his government is empowering women and mainstreaming marginalized youth, religious and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities and the transgender community.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had a warm and cordial meeting with Commonwealth of Nations Secretary General Ms. Patricia Scotland on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Leaders event to welcome King Charles III as the new Head of the Commonwealth. Held in London. .
During his conversation, the Prime Minister told the Secretary General how he envisioned reimagining the Commonwealth in light of the major challenges facing the global community. He also assured the SG that Pakistan is keen to work with member states and the SG to make the organization more relevant and effective in areas such as climate change and youth empowerment. In this context, the Prime Minister also informed the SG that Pakistan will host the 10th Commonwealth Youth Ministerial Meeting which had to be postponed due to the unprecedented floods that severely damaged the country’s economy and infrastructure. The Prime Minister also invited the SG to pay an official visit to Pakistan, to which the SG assured him that she would do so as soon as possible.
