Pakistan, AIIB sign $1.6 million loan agreement

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank on Wednesday signed a $1.6 million advance loan agreement for the Lahore Water and Wastewater Management Project.


Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Sardar Ayaz Sadiq witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement at the Ministry of Economic Affairs. On behalf of the Government of Pakistan, Secretary Economic Affairs Division Dr. Kazim Niaz and Director General of Infrastructure Investment Department of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Region 2, Ms. Supi Thiravanthorn signed the agreement on behalf of AIIB.


On the occasion, the Minister for Economic Affairs welcomed the delegation of AIIB to the Ministry and thanked them for their continued support in the efforts of the Government of Pakistan to achieve sustainable economic and social development of the country. He informed the delegation that this project is of utmost importance for the city of Lahore as it will ensure sustainable supply of clean water, reduce the deteriorating environmental impact due to untreated sewage and provide better services to the public. will, thereby helping to strengthen it financially. entity.


Preparatory activities will include the recruitment of two international PMCs, to support engineering and design activities for each of the project’s infrastructure components. PMCs will review the design, finalize tender documents, assist the implementing agency in initiating the tendering process, update environmental and social assessments to take into account planned land acquisitions. which will be completed and verified after an independent evaluation study. That the necessary occupational health and safety provisions are included, and for their inclusion in the tender documents, during technical design review, assistance to the implementing agency in updating environmental and social management plans. will do Preparatory activities will also help with incremental operating costs for project implementation, hiring of relevant experts to support office rent, transport and office expenses.


The Economic Affairs Secretary thanked the team of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for providing continuous support to the Government of Pakistan to achieve national development goals. He also expressed the hope that the preparatory work would lead to the early signing and implementation of the major project aimed at ensuring sustainable supply of clean water and improving the existing sewage system through provision of new trunk sewers/drains. to create and thereby reduce the deteriorating environmental impact.
