Russia has imposed an entry ban on “500 Americans”, a list that includes former US President Barack Obama, late-night television host Stephen Colbert, and CNN journalist Erin Burnett. The ban is in response to anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the Biden administration, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The list includes several people, including Obama, former US ambassador Jon Huntsman, several US senators and Charles Q. Brown Jr., the expected future chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Notably, American late-night TV hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Colbert and Seth Meyers are also on the list.
According to a statement from the State Department, the ban extends beyond political figures and includes government and law enforcement officials involved in the persecution of opponents following the January 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol. are directly involved in oppression. The incident involved several supporters of former US President Donald Trump who tried to block the certification of Joe Biden as president.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a later statement reported by JEE News, appeared to question the arrest of the rioters, suggesting they had come to Congress with political demands. The latest list of approved individuals released Friday includes CNN anchor Erin Burnett, along with other journalists such as CNN chief international security correspondent Nick Peyton Walsh, senior global affairs analyst Biana Goldrega and CNN contributor Timothy Naftali. Note that while the list was titled “500 Americans,” Peyton Walsh is a British citizen.
While justifying the sanctions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that now is the time for Washington to understand that any hostile move against Russia will be met with a strong response. However, the statement did not provide specific complaints against each individual or explain the implications of the restrictions beyond the entry ban.
Additionally, the ministry revealed that it has been denying the US Embassy’s request for consular access to US journalist Ivan Gershkovich, citing the Lavrov-Poll’s failure to issue visas to Russian journalists. It refers to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s visit to the US in April.
