Chairman NAB got powers to close cases and investigations.

The notification to increase the powers of Chairman NAB has been issued under the NAB Amendment Act 2023, under which the Chairman NAB has been empowered to close cases and investigations.

NAB Amendment Act 2023 came into effect. Chairman NAB will be able to close cases and investigations.

According to the amendment act, all corruption cases filed against NAB section 5 will be closed.

In the absence of Chairman NAB, the Deputy Chairman of the Anti-Graft Watchdog will have powers.

It should be noted that according to the NAB law, the amendment bill will come into effect from 1999.

Earlier, President Dr. Arif Alvi on Sunday sent the National Accountability (Amendment) Bill, 2023 back to Parliament for reconsideration after observing that earlier amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999, were pending before the Supreme Court.

The President’s Secretariat Press Wing said that the President sent back the piece of legislation under clause (1) (b) of Article 75 of the Constitution.

Earlier, the Prime Minister had sent his advice to the President for approval on the said bill.

National Accountability (Amendment) Act 2023
The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice on April 10 passed the National Accountability (Amendment) Act, 2023, which seeks to remove legal complications in the transfer of cases from accountability courts to relevant forums, which are under NAB’s jurisdiction. On April 19, the Senate passed the bill without referring it to the relevant standing committee. This bill was presented by Prime Minister Nazir Tarar in the Senate.

The Bill not only empowers Chairman NAB to transfer corruption cases of less than Rs 500 million to the concerned agency, authority or department but also closes pending inquiries and investigations where in his opinion any The case is not made.

According to a provision contained in Section 4 of the NAB Ordinance, when the post of Chairman NAB becomes vacant or the Chairman is absent or unable to perform the duties of his office, the Deputy Chairman will act due to any action. In the absence of Chairman NAB and Deputy Chairman, the Federal Government will appoint one of the senior officers of NAB as Acting Chairman.
