President Joe Biden stumbles after presenting final diplomas during a graduation ceremony at the U.S. Air Force Academy. With the help of three people, the 80-year-old president quickly found his feet and returned to his seat unaided. As he was being helped up, Biden pointed behind him, indicating the object he was tripping over.
According to White House communications director Ben LaBolt, who shared an update on Twitter, Biden was not injured. LaBolt explained that there was a sandbag on stage when Biden was shaking hands, which caused the stumble.
Prior to the event, President Biden delivered a commencement address to an enthusiastic audience, stressing the graduates’ entry into an increasingly volatile global landscape and highlighting the challenges posed by Russia and China.
Notably, President Biden is seeking re-election in 2024 and underwent a physical examination in February where doctors declared him healthy and fit to carry out his duties.
