Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni underwent a successful left knee surgery in Mumbai after leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their fifth IPL title.
Dhoni had been playing with a heavy brace on his left knee throughout the IPL season and had consulted renowned sports orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dinsha Pardiwala for surgery. The surgery, called “arthroscopic repair”, was performed at Kokilabin Hospital in Mumbai.
Sources close to the CSK management revealed that Dhoni is doing well and will be discharged in a day or two. He will then undergo an extensive rehabilitation period before returning to the game. Sources also expressed hope that Dhoni will have enough time to recover and play in the next IPL season.
Dhoni’s knee injury affected his batting performance, as he often dropped below No. 8 and looked less agile running between the wickets. However, his leadership and wicket-keeping skills continued throughout the tournament.
After the IPL final, Dhoni hinted at the possibility of retirement but expressed his desire to play one more season for CSK fans if his body allows. He acknowledged the immense love and support he received from CSK fans and felt that it would be a gift for him if he could play another season.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had earlier said that Dhoni’s decision to continue playing would be entirely up to him. He emphasized that the team had not thought about Dhoni retiring or giving up the captaincy.
Now that the surgery has been successfully completed, Dhoni has returned to his hometown Ranchi to rest before starting his rehabilitation. The CSK management and fans will eagerly await his recovery and hope to see him back on the field in the next IPL season.
