Twitter’s second head of trust and security, Elon Musk, has reportedly resigned.
Ella Irwin took over the role when previous chief Yoel Roth left in November 2022 – a month after Mr Musk took over the company.
The head of trust and safety has been tasked with content moderation, a topic that has come under the spotlight since Mr. Musk took office.
JEE News has contacted Twitter and Ms Irwin for comment.
She confirmed to JEE News that she has stepped down. The reason for her resignation is unclear.
However, it came a day after Mr Musk publicly criticized the decision to moderate content on Twitter.
She called the decision to limit the video’s visibility over accusations of misogyny “the fault of many people on Twitter”.
“Whether or not you agree with using one’s preferred pronoun, not doing so is extremely rude and certainly does not break any laws,” she wrote.
It comes a week after the social media platform pulled out of the European Union’s voluntary regulation to fight misinformation.
Mr. Musk announced last month that Linda Yaccarino, the former head of advertising at NBC Universal, would become Twitter’s new chief executive. He hasn’t started his role yet.
Content moderation.
In-depth studies have indicated that hate speech is on the rise under Mr Musk’s tenure, with the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a London-based campaign group, seeing a significant increase in filth since the takeover.
And in December 2022, Twitter eliminated the volunteer group that advised it on self-harm, child abuse and hate speech.
But steps have been taken to moderate content accuracy, with Mr Musk announcing that the platform’s community notes feature will be extended to include images.
Community Notes is a crowdsourced fact-checking system, in which Twitter users can add comments that provide context to tweets — often labeling them false or misleading.
The platform plans to expand this feature to include video in the future.
