The death toll in the horrific train accident in India’s eastern state of Odisha has risen to 280, JEE News reported, with more casualties expected as rescue operations continued for a second day.
Indian authorities have called in the army to help with ongoing relief efforts, while a day of mourning has also been declared for Friday’s deadly train crash that left more than 900 people injured.
According to initial reports, the tragedy occurred when the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express derailed and collided with the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express on the adjacent track. But a third, a freight train, was also allegedly involved in the accident.
According to JEE News, authorities fear the death toll to rise further as many passengers are trapped in the overturned coaches of Yeshwantpur Express.
