Polish tennis prodigy Iga Swiatek continued his dominance on the Paris clay courts by winning his third French Open title in four years.
In a thrilling final match against Karolina Mochova, Svitek won with scores of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to claim her fourth Grand Slam title. Since becoming world number one in April last year, Svetek has lost just two of 26 matches at Grand Slam tournaments. At just 22, she became the youngest woman to win back-to-back titles at Roland Garros since Monica Seles.
Switek’s road to victory was not easy. Mochowa put up a great fight, and the match was full of twists and turns. Swiatek showed exceptional skill from the baseline, using precise angles to his advantage. She took an early lead but faced a comeback from Mochowa in the second set to force a decisive third set. However, Swiatek regained control, winning three straight games and eventually taking the victory.
After the match, an emotional Swetek acknowledged the tough competition and thanked his opponent. He also thanked his team and his family for supporting him. Switek’s win made her the first woman to successfully defend the Roland Garros women’s singles title since Justine Heenen in 2007.
With her latest victory, Swiatek now joins the ranks of Serena Williams, Monica Sales, and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario as three-time champions at Roland Garros. Tennis legend Chris Evert praised Switek’s performance and predicted that she could win “at least 10 French Opens” in her career. However, Swiatek is focused on taking it one day at a time and growing as a player, without setting lofty goals for himself.
The final match was a thrilling contest lasting two hours and 46 minutes. Svitek took a commanding lead early on, but Mochova countered with her different style of play. In the end, Switek’s resilience and determination brought him victory.
Despite a minor mishap when he accidentally dropped the trophy’s lid, Switek hopes for more opportunities to hold the prestigious Suzanne Langlin Trophy in the future.
