The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the deployment of F-22 Raptors to the Middle East due to an increase in the unsafe and unprofessional behavior of Russian aircraft in the region.
The decision is intended to demonstrate the US military’s ability to rapidly transform forces and deliver overwhelming force when needed.
“The unsafe and unprofessional behavior of Russian forces is not what we expect from a professional air force,” CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla said in a news release, his regular routine of agreeing on airspace dispute measures. A violation increases the risk of escalation or miscalculation.
“Together with our partners and allies, we are committed to improving security and stability in the region.”
The F-22 Raptors, which belong to the 94th Fighter Squadron at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, are coordinated with other coalition forces on the ground and in the air. According to CENTCOM Commander Gen. Eric Corella, the move comes in response to Russia’s repeated violations of agreed airspace dispute measures, which pose a risk of escalation or miscalculation.
In recent weeks, Russian troops in Syria have flouted deconfliction protocols with U.S. and coalition troops, raising concerns among U.S. military officials. Lt. Gen. Grenkevich, who is in charge of air operations in the Middle East, expressed his concern that Russia is deliberately trying to provoke the United States into war in the skies over Syria. He emphasized that the US had broader options to respond, while warning Russia against any direct confrontation.
“I will tell you that just in the last few days, and as recently as this morning, the Russians have continued this kind of provocative behavior,” Lt. Gen. Grankevich said in an interview with Defense One.
Despite Russian efforts to demoralize American troops and push them out of the region, Lt. Gen. Grynkevich asserted that such efforts would be futile. He said that unless Russia resorted to military force, which would not be good for them, they could not push America out of the airspace.
The presence of fewer than 1,000 U.S. troops in Syria, engaged in a campaign to defeat ISIS, has left them exposed to routine attacks by Iran-backed groups. Additionally, Lt. Gen. Grynkevich revealed that Russian jets have violated airspace over a US military base about 25 times.
In response to the aggressive behavior of Russian aircraft and concerns about the security and stability of the region, the US military has taken proactive measures by redeploying F-22 fighter jets from Europe. CENTCOM’s decision to bolster its forces in the Middle East underscores the need to deal with escalating incidents in the airspace and maintain a strong presence in the region.
